Christian technology experts are urging churches to engage seriously with the opportunities and potential dangers presented by rapidly developing artificial intelligence. Their concerns follow warnings from leading AI developers about risks created by increasingly powerful systems. Recently retired Bishop of Oxford Steven Croft believes the Church should rediscover biblical language concerning heaven, hell, death and judgement as society considers technology that could potentially threaten humanity. Christian AI specialist Hugh Chichester says concerns are understandable, particularly as advanced models develop greater capabilities while governments struggle to regulate them effectively. However, he believes growing uncertainty presents Christians with an opportunity to point people towards the security and hope found in Jesus Christ. He also hopes AI could eventually remove repetitive aspects of work, creating more opportunities for creativity, relationships and innovation. The CofE’s House of Bishops is considering the issue as leaders seek to understand AI’s risks and to equip churches to respond pastorally as the technology becomes increasingly embedded in everyday life.
