Shoplifting remains a serious problem across England, with more than 500,000 offences recorded during the latest year, despite numbers falling slightly from the previous period. More than half of recorded cases were closed without a suspect being identified, highlighting the challenge facing police and retailers. Independent businesses and charity shops say repeated thefts are affecting income, staff morale, and their ability to serve local communities. Some stores have closed changing rooms after thieves reportedly used them to conceal stolen clothing, while retailers also face organised gangs, persistent offenders, and abuse of self-service checkouts. Official statistics might significantly underestimate the true scale of shoplifting because many incidents are not reported. A relatively small number of prolific offenders are believed to be responsible for large numbers of crimes. While the Government says progress is being made, retailers are calling for stronger policing and effective consequences for repeat offenders.
