Andy Burnham has indicated that decisions on two controversial North Sea energy developments will be announced shortly. The proposed Jackdaw gas field, east of Aberdeen, and Rosebank oil field, northwest of Shetland, have faced years of legal challenges and environmental opposition. Energy secretary Miatta Fahnbulleh said a decision on Jackdaw was imminent, while Rosebank would take longer. Kemi Badenoch urged the government to approve both projects, arguing that domestic production would strengthen energy security and provide gas for British households. However, Burnham said previous approvals had been overturned by Scottish courts because their environmental assessments failed to consider emissions produced when extracted fuels are burned. Industry representatives argue that the projects would support employment, investment and energy independence during international instability. Environmental campaigners warn that further fossil fuel development would undermine climate commitments and delay investment in renewable energy. Burnham has promised a pragmatic approach while maintaining Labour’s commitment not to issue new exploration licences, leaving significant questions about Britain’s future energy strategy. See
