Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, Sudan’s army chief, has ordered an investigation into a devastating airstrike on a gold mine near the Egyptian border. The attack occurred on 10 October in the mountainous Jabal al-Uqaydat mining area, killing large numbers of people and leaving many others injured or missing. One organisation estimates that more than two hundred people died and approximately 120 were wounded; however, another group has put the death toll at only 72. The country’s transitional sovereignty council announced that a fact-finding committee would investigate the circumstances and report its findings. Sudanese and Egyptian authorities have remained in contact following the incident. Egypt’s foreign minister emphasised mutual respect for sovereignty and territorial integrity. The tragedy comes as the civil war between the national army and the Rapid Support Forces continues unabated.
