More than 37 million people in Myanmar are experiencing multidimensional poverty or are at risk of falling into it, according to a UNDP report published on 8 October. About 17.9 million people currently experience such poverty, while another 19.5 million are vulnerable. The report explains that poverty involves overlapping disadvantages in healthcare, education, housing and living standards, rather than simply insufficient income. Conditions are particularly severe in conflict-affected Kayah and Rakhine states, where insecurity and movement restrictions compound hardship. More than half of Myanmar’s households have experienced economic shocks, while around one fifth have faced natural hazards. Displaced families, temporary workers and people with limited education face particular difficulties. UNDP recommends targeted assistance to strengthen household incomes, access to essential services, and resilience against future crises.
