New research from the Evangelical Alliance suggests evangelical Christianity in the UK is significantly larger, younger, and more ethnically diverse than commonly assumed. Based on a survey of 8,407 adults, the study estimates that around 5.5 million people hold evangelical beliefs, representing just under 8% of the UK population and around two-thirds of practising Christians. More than 40% of evangelicals are under 35, making young adults the age group most likely to identify with evangelical Christianity, while 30% come from ethnic minority backgrounds. Researchers also found that 7.2% of UK adults qualify as practising Christians, attending church monthly while praying and reading Scripture at least weekly. Evangelical Alliance CEO Gavin Calver described the findings as evidence of a thriving, diverse movement which remains central to British church life. The organisation says the research challenges imported political stereotypes surrounding the word 'evangelical', portraying instead a broad movement spanning denominations and cultures, united by commitment to Jesus Christ and making him known.
